Julie O’Connor, LCSW, PIP
|
- Julie specializes in children, adult, individual and family therapy, crisis intervention, and sexual abuse. She is known for her work with sexual abuse victims and her ability to complete extended forensic evaluations. Julie O’Connor worked for the Department of Human Resources for six and a half years and then started her private practice working with adults and children. She was awarded a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Alabama.
- Julie is a licensed certified social worker (LCSW #1929C), and has her private independent practice certification (PIP). She is level II trained in EMDR.
- Julie comes from a family history of men who answered the Country’s call back to her grandfather’s service in WWII and Korea. Husband Tim currently serves with the Air National Guard in Birmingham.

Kelley Sharit
|
- Kelley currently works at a military Post Office, inspecting outgoing mail and shipping goods out of Afghanistan. In her free time, she is working at the Shindand USO. She is expected to return to Birmingham in the coming year.
- She is a tireless advocate for veterans and has spent many years supporting them and raising money for veterans’ organizations including Ride2Recovery, 3 Hots and a Cot, and the Wounded Warrior Project.
- Previously, Kelley worked at Jefferson State Community College, where she assisted soldiers who were returning to college after deployment. Kelley has organized students to bring in goods and supplies to ship to soldiers overseas 3 times a year. JSCC also did a toy drive, and Kelley went to Walter Reed Hospital to take the toys for the children of the soldiers in the hospital.
- Kelley earned a degree in Psychology from the University of Montevallo in 2004.

Larry J. Siegel

- Larry Siegel has diversified media and consulting experience in both commercial and federal contracting environments. He has a combination of senior management and consulting experience with major newspaper publishing and broadcasting companies and has served as trustee and officer on numerous non-profit boards.
- Before relocating to Birmingham in 1999, Siegel served as director of new ventures at George Mason University’s Entrepreneurship Center, in Fairfax, Virginia. He started newdimensions consulting llc in 2000, providing development consulting services to diversified business owners and managers. He serves as an executive coach with Lee Hecht Harrison, an international consulting firm specializing in leadership effectiveness and career development.
- Larry is a Navy veteran, having served with the Amphibious Group, Atlantic Fleet. He was re-called to the Navy Battle Group, Key West, during the Cuban Crisis in 1961. A native of Balboa, Panama Canal Zone, Larry graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa with a degree in business management.

- Jenny earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Alabama, with a concentration in planning and management. She also has a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University. Jenny has a wealth of experience working with non-profit and human service organizations. She comes from a family of veterans, including her father, brother and husband.

| Richard E. Beth, Ph.D. |
- Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Trained EMDR Psychotherapist
- Dr. Richard Beth is a 1999 doctoral graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Clinical Medical Psychology Program. He performed his clinical internship at Vanderbilt University and the Nashville Veterans Administration Medical Center. His post-doctoral fellowship was at Birmingham Psychiatry. Dr. Beth is an Alabama Licensed Clinical Psychologist (#1049).
- Dr. Beth is level 2 trained in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and clinical hypnosis. He is a member in good standing of both the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). He is an ASCH-approved consultant in clinical hypnosis and trained EMDR psychotherapist and has received specialized training from both organizations in the treatment of simple and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociative disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and chronic pain management and in working with veterans and their families. He has worked with Vietnam Combat Veterans at the Nashville Veterans Administration Medical Center (Nashville VAMC) and with Gulf War Veterans at the Birmingham VAMC.

- Kelly is a trauma specialist. Her passion lies in trauma resolution and life quality enhancement. She is a Level II trained EMDR psychotherapist and an ASCH-trained hypnotherapist. She works with all ages to include child, adolescent, and adult individual and group psychotherapy. Her areas of interest include working with survivors of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and combat trauma, as well as issues of life transition, separation, grief, and loss. Kelly treats a wide spectrum of psychiatric/psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- A graduate of the University of Alabama, Kelly earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work. She has pursued highly specialized continuing education and training, which, along with her clinical experience, qualify her to treat victims of trauma, including combat stress–related disorders as well as complex PTSD. Kelly is a Licensed Certified Social Worker and a Private Independent Practitioner (PIP #0745-1880C). Kelly is an active member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), and EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).

Resource People
Several trauma/PTSD experts volunteered at first invitation to serve on our Advisory Board. Each person will provide counsel on Best Practice services and exercise quality oversight. Advisory board members will also join in educating Alabamians about emotional distress and PTSD issues, symptoms, and treatment. |
| Beverly Ann Dexter, PhD., Commander, United States Navy, Retired |
- Commander Beverly Dexter, Ph.D., Retired U.S. Navy Psychologist, served three tours with Marines in the U.S. and Iraq. She is a warfare qualified former Navy Special Operations Officer (salvage diver and ship driver) and former Navy Supply Corps Officer. She completed operational tours on four Navy ships and frequently gives professional military presentations on leadership, resilience building for military families and prevention and treatment of trauma.
- CDR Dexter has lived military life as a single person, double active duty couple, “dependent” wife and mom, deployed mom, stationed overseas and deployed to a combat zone. She is the Founder and Chairman of the EMDR International Association Military Special Interest Group and the ISTSS Military Special Interest Group. Dr Dexter is a leader in the effort to improve trauma treatment for Active Duty, Reservists, and National Guard returning from combat and for their families, and has considerable experience serving Army National Guard troops in Iraq.

- Pat is a retired military hospital executive having served at military hospitals in Texas, Washington D.C., and Virginia. Pat is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a certified Baldridge National Healthcare Evaluator, and vice president of the Panama Canal Museum in Seminole, Florida. She is nationally known and called upon frequently for hospital consulting assignments. Pat was awarded her Master of Science in Health Care Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. She did residency at Brook Army Medical Center.

- Josephine (Jo) Pryce earned her Master’s in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University and was awarded her Ph.D. by the University of California, Berkley. Jo teaches courses on social work practice, research, and traumatic stress. She has developed deployment and reunion materials for the U.S. Army and comes from a family of veterans.

- David, a retired, 30 year, Army Colonel, did two tours of duty in Vietnam and serves on the National Association of Readjustment Counseling for Veterans. David earned his Master’s from the University of Nebraska, and his MSSW from the University of Texas, Arlington.
